Jakarta Bay

Jakarta Bay is a large bay on the northern coast of West Java, opening into the Java Sea. It is the maritime front of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. The bay has been the entry point for European colonial powers since the 16th century, serving as the anchorage for the VOC fleet after the Fall of Jayakarta in 1619.
The bay today faces significant environmental challenges due to heavy urbanization, industrial pollution, and land subsidence. In the archipelago’s spiritual geography, the bay is seen as a boundary where the three realms meet, and local communities hold rituals for its guardian spirits. The mana-curse is said to be reflected in the bay’s ecological decline—a symptom of the archipelago’s collective spiritual weakening.
