The Kediri Kingdom was a powerful Javanese kingdom that flourished from the 11th to the 13th century in East Java. This period was marked by cultural and literary achievement, territorial expansion, and the production of some of the finest works of Old Javanese literature, including the Kakawin Bharatayuddha and the works of Mpu Panuluh.

The Rise of Kediri

The Kediri Kingdom emerged after the division of the Kahuripan Kingdom by Airlangga. Kediri became the dominant kingdom in East Java, expanding its influence across the region.

The Golden Age

Under King Jayabhaya, Kediri reached its peak. The court patronized poets and scholars, producing works of literature that remain classics of Javanese culture.

The Literature

The Kakawin Bharatayuddha, composed by Mpu Sedah and Mpu Panuluh, is the most famous work from this period. Other works include the Gathotkacasraya and the Hariwangsa.
