The Mataram Sultanate rose to power in the 16th century, unifying much of Java under its rule. The sultanate was known for its military strength, cultural achievements, and the development of Javanese-Islamic culture.
Sultan Agung
Sultan Agung (r. 1613–1645) was the greatest ruler of Mataram. He expanded the sultanate’s territory and led campaigns against the VOC in Batavia. His reign is remembered as a golden age of Javanese culture.
The Decline
In the 18th century, Mataram declined under Dutch colonial pressure. The sultanate was fragmented, and its power was reduced. The Dutch used the division of Mataram to strengthen their control over Java.
