Serat Centhini
English (EN)
The Encyclopaedia of Java
Serat Centhini is the greatest work of Javanese literature ever written—a twelve-volume epic that contains the entire world of Java, composed in verse and song over nine years by three court poets under the direction of a crown prince. With 722 cantos and 247,766 lines of poetry, it is one of the longest literary works in any language, a work so vast that scholars have called it “the encyclopedia of Javanese culture” and “the pinnacle of mystical synthesis.”[reference:1]
The original title of the work is not Serat Centhini but Suluk Tambangraras—“The Song of the Fragrant Flower.”[reference:2] The name Centhini came later, derived from a character in the story, and it is by this name that the work is now known. More than 200 manuscripts of the text survive, a testament to its enduring importance in Javanese culture.[reference:3]
The Making of a Masterpiece
The creation of Serat Centhini was an act of cultural preservation. In 1814, during the British occupation of Java (1811–1816), Crown Prince Mangkunegoro—who would later be enthroned as Pakubuwono V of Surakarta (r. 1820–1823)—commissioned a work that would gather and preserve the knowledge of Javanese civilization. The prince was deeply committed to Javanese literature, and he directed the project with great care.[reference:6]
The work took nine years to complete (1814–1823)[reference:7] and was written by three court poets:
| Poet | Role |
|---|---|
| R. Ng. Ranggasutrasna | One of the primary poets[reference:8] |
| R. Ng. Yasadipura II (also known as Raden Tumenggung Sasranagara) | One of the greatest Javanese poets of his time[reference:9] |
| R. Ng. Sastradipura (also known as Kyai Haji Muhammad Ilhar) | The third poet[reference:10] |
The earliest version of the Serat Centhini came from Cirebon at the beginning of the 17th century. When it reached Surakarta in the late 18th to early 19th century, the court poets rewrote it, expanding the number of episodes and characters, as well as the kinds of information and literary style found in the text.
The Story
The narrative of Serat Centhini is set in the 1630s, during the reign of Sultan Agung of Mataram, who conquered the city of Giri Kedaton in Gresik, East Java. Giri Kedaton was a religious school founded by Sunan Giri, one of the Wali Songo, which had become a famous center of Muslim teaching and political influence.
The main characters are the three children of Sunan Giri Prapen: Prince Jayengresmi, Prince Jayengsari, and Princess Rancangkapti. When their father is defeated by Sultan Agung’s forces, the three royal children are forced to flee the palace and begin a journey across Java.[reference:15]
Their journey becomes a journey of life—a pilgrimage through the landscape of Java that is also a pilgrimage through the landscape of the soul. Along the way, they encounter teachers, mystics, and ordinary people, and they learn the knowledge that is essential to the Javanese way of life.[reference:16]
The story also follows the journey of Cebolang, the son of a scholar named Ki Akhadiyat, adding another thread to the narrative.[reference:17]
The Encyclopaedia of Javanese Knowledge
What makes Serat Centhini extraordinary is not its story—it is everything else. The work is a repository of Javanese knowledge, and it covers an astonishing range of subjects:
| Subject | Description |
|---|---|
| Music and Dance | Traditional forms, instruments, and performances[reference:18] |
| Ceremonies and Rituals | Life-cycle rituals, agricultural ceremonies, and temple offerings[reference:19] |
| Divination and Magic | Javanese systems of prediction and spiritual practice[reference:20] |
| Eroticism | The Javanese art of love—secrets of sex play, the heart of a woman, and the causes of marriage failure[reference:21] |
| The Human Life Cycle | Birth, marriage, and death—the passage of the soul through time[reference:22] |
| Religion and Spiritualism | Islamic law, Sufism, and Javanese mysticism[reference:23] |
| Mysticism and Reincarnation | The journey of the soul through the realms[reference:24] |
| Tales and Moral Lessons | Stories of place origins, moral warnings, and ethical teachings[reference:25] |
The work is a synthesis—a gathering of all the knowledge that a Javanese person needed to live a complete life. It is not a textbook; it is a poem, a song that sings the world into being.
The Mystical Dimension
Serat Centhini is considered the pinnacle of suluk literature—the tradition of Javanese mystical poetry that emerged from the synthesis of Sufism and Javanese spirituality.[reference:26][reference:27] The work contains deep explorations of Islamic mysticism (tasawwuf) blended with Javanese mystical traditions, exploring the path to “life perfection” and the union of the soul with the divine.[reference:28]
The work is noted for its exploration of religious pluralism—the coexistence of Islamic monotheism with indigenous Javanese spiritual concepts, and even, in some passages, the presence of Christian teachings embedded within the text.[reference:29] The Serat Centhini is a testament to the openness of the Javanese mystical tradition, a tradition that could absorb and transform diverse spiritual influences.
The “Centhini” narrative also contains figures representing the tension between syariat (Islamic law) and hakikat (mystical truth)—the eternal debate between the exoteric and esoteric dimensions of Islam in Java.[reference:30]
The Literary Achievement
The Serat Centhini is often described as the greatest expression of literary art ever written in Javanese. It is a work of extraordinary ambition—12 volumes, 722 cantos, 247,766 lines, and 4,200 folio pages.[reference:32] It is a work that contains the entire world of Java, written in a language that is both exquisite and profound.
The work also influenced later Javanese literature. The Serat Kalatidha by Ranggawarsita, one of the most famous works of Javanese poetry, drew on the Serat Centhini.[reference:34] The Centhini tradition continued to evolve through the colonial period and into the modern era, a living tradition that shaped the consciousness of Java.[reference:35]

Story Hook: The Poet Who Remembered Everything
A young Javanese scholar discovers a fragment of the Serat Centhini that has never been translated—a section that is missing from all known manuscripts. The fragment contains a prophecy: that the knowledge of Java will be forgotten, and that the forgetting will be the work of the curse.
The scholar travels to the village of the last empu of Javanese literature, an old man who has memorized the entire Serat Centhini. The old man tells her that the poem is not just a text—it is a memory. It is the memory of Java, written in verse so that it cannot be forgotten.
“The Serat Centhini is not a book. It is a memory—the memory of the ancestors, the memory of the land, the memory of the spirit that moves through all things. When you read it, you are not just reading words—you are remembering what it means to be Javanese.” — An old Javanese scholar
Visual Imagery
The Serat Centhini is often depicted in art and photography as:
- An old palm-leaf manuscript (lontar), its pages yellowed and its script fading
- The pendopo of the Surakarta palace, where the court poets once composed the work
- A Javanese landscape—mountains, rice fields, and coast—the landscape of the journey
- The characters of the story—Jayengresmi, Jayengsari, and Rancangkapti—traveling through Java
- A circle of mystics, reciting the suluk poetry, their voices rising in song
