Semedi

The Art of Listening to Silence
Semedi is not meditation as the West understands it. It is not relaxation, not stress relief, not mindfulness for its own sake. It is a journey—a journey into the silence of the self, a practice of listening to what lies beneath the noise of the mind, a discipline of opening the heart to the presence of the divine.
The word semedi comes from the Javanese root semedi, meaning “to be still” or “to be silent.” But in Javanese practice, stillness is not an end—it is a means. The goal of semedi is not to empty the mind but to fill it—to fill it with rasa, the deep intuitive perception that transcends thought, to fill it with the presence of the ancestors, to fill it with the whisper of the divine.
The Practice of Semedi
Semedi is practiced alone, in silence, in a place of spiritual power. The practitioner sits in stillness, often in the cross-legged posture, with the hands resting on the knees or folded in the lap. The eyes are closed, and the breath is slow and deep. The mind is not forced to be empty; it is allowed to settle, like sediment in a pond, until the water becomes clear.
The practice can last for hours or even days. It is not a practice of comfort; it is a practice of discipline. The body aches, the mind wanders, the distractions arise—but the practitioner does not give in. They sit through the discomfort, through the boredom, through the doubt, until something shifts.
The Preparation for Semedi
The Javanese tradition requires preparation for semedi:
| Preparation | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Puasa | Fasting—to purify the body and sharpen the spirit |
| Sucen | Purification—cleansing the body and the space with water and incense |
| Kramas | Washing the hair with herbal water—a ritual cleansing of the mind |
| Kemben | Wearing a cloth tied around the waist—a symbol of readiness and humility |
The Three Stages of Semedi
In Javanese tradition, semedi unfolds in three stages:
| Stage | Description |
|---|---|
| Sepi | The first stage—the silence of the mind, the quieting of the thoughts. The practitioner begins to hear the silence. |
| Sekti | The second stage—the perception of spiritual power. The practitioner feels the presence of the ancestors, the spirits, the divine. |
| Sujana | The third stage—the state of wisdom. The practitioner perceives the truth directly, without the filter of thought. |
The Places of Semedi
The Javanese tradition holds that certain places are more conducive to semedi than others. These are places where the boundary between the visible and invisible worlds is thin:
| Place | Significance |
|---|---|
| **[[mount-merapi | Mount Merapi]]** |
| **[[mount-semeru | Mount Semeru]]** |
| **[[dieng-plateau | Dieng Plateau]]** |
| Forests and Caves | Places of solitude, where the spirits of the wild are present |

Story Hook: The Voice in the Silence
A young Javanese man, troubled by the noise of the modern world, retreats to the slopes of Mount Merapi to practice semedi. He has been taught the discipline by his grandfather, a dukun who spent his life in silence and prayer. He sits for hours, the mountain rumbling beneath him, the smoke rising from the crater, his mind wandering and settling like the ash that falls on the forest floor.
On the third day, he hears something—not with his ears, but with his heart. It is a voice, but not a voice that speaks in words. It is a presence, a knowing, a truth that he has always carried but never heard. The voice tells him that the silence is not empty—it is full. Full of the ancestors, full of the spirits, full of the divine. And they have been waiting for him to listen.
“The silence is not empty. It is full. It is full of the voices of the ancestors, the whispers of the spirits, the breath of the divine. But you must learn to listen.” — A Javanese dukun, teaching the practice of semedi
Visual Imagery
Semedi is often depicted in photography and art as:
- A solitary figure sitting in meditation on a mountain slope, facing the sunrise
- The silhouette of a person against the mist of a volcanic crater
- A Javanese forest, with a single figure sitting beneath a tree
- The smoke rising from a volcano, mingling with the stillness of the morning
- A person in traditional Javanese attire, hands folded, eyes closed, face serene
