The Ancestral King

Kudungga was a ruler of the Kutai Kingdom in East Kalimantan during the 4th–5th century. He is one of the earliest known kings in Indonesian history, whose descendants, including his grandson Mulawarman, would establish the first Hindu kingdom in the archipelago, as recorded in the Yupa inscriptions.

The Yupa Inscriptions

The Yupa inscriptions, found near the Mahakam River, record the genealogy of the Kutai kings. They mention Kudungga as an ancestor of Mulawarman, the king who gave 20,000 cows to Brahmins.

Legacy

Kudungga is remembered as the founding ancestor of the Kutai royal dynasty. His descendants established the first Hindu kingdom in the archipelago.
