The Background

In 1963, the Federation of Malaysia was formed, incorporating Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak, and North Borneo (Sabah). President Sukarno of Indonesia opposed the formation, viewing it as a “neo-colonial” plot by Britain to encircle Indonesia. He declared a policy of Konfrontasi — confrontation.

The Confrontation

The confrontation involved:

  • Military incursions: Indonesian forces crossed into Malaysian territory.
  • Guerrilla attacks: Indonesian-backed guerrillas attacked Malaysian targets.
  • Diplomatic pressure: Indonesia withdrew from the United Nations.

The End

The confrontation ended in 1966, after Sukarno was replaced by Suharto. Suharto normalized relations with Malaysia, ending the conflict.
