History
Sumedang was once the seat of the Sumedang Larang Kingdom, an important pre-colonial Sundanese kingdom. The region later became part of the Dutch colonial administration. During the revolutionary period (1945–1949), Sumedang played a crucial role as the birthplace of the TNI, the Indonesian National Armed Forces.
Angklung
Sumedang is the modern center of the angklung tradition. The angklung orchestra was revived and developed here in the 20th century by Daeng Sutigna and his family, bringing the traditional instrument into the modern era.
