The Papuan folktales are the oral traditions of the indigenous peoples of Papua — stories of the creation of the mountains, the first humans, and the spirits of the forest, preserving the wisdom of one of the world’s most ancient cultures.
The Papuan creation stories describe the formation of the island’s iconic landscapes — the towering peaks, the deep valleys, and the dense rainforests. The spirits of the forest are said to be the guardians of the three-realms and the the-forth-realm, protecting the people who live in harmony with the land.
The Papuan folktales are a guide to understanding the mana-curse. The stories teach that the spiritual balance of the world is maintained by the flow of mana, and that the disruption of this flow can lead to sickness, drought, and disaster.
