Why This Overview?

Indonesia does not have a single unified epic tradition like China’s Journey to the West or Investiture of the Gods. Instead, it has multiple epic traditions rooted in different regions, courts, and performance cultures.

1. The Wayang Epic Tradition (Java & Bali)

Rooted in: The Mahabharata and Ramayana, but heavily indigenized over centuries. The tradition is performed through wayang kulit and is deeply connected to the three-realms cosmology.

2. The Panji Epic Tradition (East Java)

Rooted in: 12th-century East Java courts. Spread across the Malay world. The Panji cycle is a romance narrative that echoes the cyclical rhythm of separation and reunion.
