Mount Lawu is a dormant stratovolcano on the border of Central and East Java — a sacred mountain of Javanese pilgrimage, associated with the origins of the Majapahit Kingdom and the hermitage of the legendary figure Ajisaka.

The mountain rises to 3,265 meters above sea level. Its slopes are home to ancient Hindu-Buddhist temples, including the Candi Ceto and Candi Sukuh, which are associated with the late Majapahit period. The mountain is also the source of the Bengawan Solo River, the longest river in Java. The mountain is a popular hiking destination and a site of spiritual retreat for Javanese mystics.

In Javanese tradition, Mount Lawu is considered one of the most sacred mountains in Java. It is believed to be the hermitage of Ajisaka, a legendary figure who is said to have introduced the Javanese script. The mountain is also associated with the Majapahit Kingdom and its decline, and is a place where the boundaries between the three-realms are thin.
