The Line That Divides Two Worlds

In 1858, a British naturalist named Alfred Russel Wallace was traveling through the Malay Archipelago when he noticed something strange. On the island of Bali, he found birds and mammals that were Asian—tigers, monkeys, and hornbills. On the island of Lombok, just 35 kilometers to the east, he found cockatoos, marsupials, and the Komodo dragon. The animals were completely different. There was a boundary that the animals could not cross—a line that divided the Asian world from the Australian world.

Wallace had discovered the Wallace Line—the boundary that separates the Sunda Shelf (which connects Sumatra, Java, and Borneo to the Asian mainland) from the Sahul Shelf (which connects New Guinea, Australia, and the Aru Islands to the Australian continent). The islands between these two shelves—the islands of Wallacea—were a transitional zone, a place where two worlds met and where evolution had followed its own path.

The Wallacea Biogeographical Region is the zone of transition between Asia and Australia. It is not a single line but a region—a network of islands that have never been connected to either continent, islands where unique species evolved in isolation, islands that are among the most biodiverse and biologically significant places on Earth.

The Wallace Line

The Wallace Line runs through the archipelago, separating the Asian biogeographical region from the Wallacean transitional zone:

SideRegionIslandsCharacteristic Fauna
WestSunda ShelfSumatra, Java, Borneo, BaliTigers, elephants, monkeys, hornbills
EastWallaceaLombok, Sulawesi, Maluku, KomodoCockatoos, marsupials, Komodo dragons, babirusa

The boundary is defined by depth—the deep water of the Lombok Strait and the other straits that separate the islands of Wallacea. The animals that lived on the Asian side could not cross the deep water; the animals that lived on the Australian side could not cross the same water. The islands of Wallacea were isolated, and isolation is the engine of evolution.

The Islands of Wallacea

The Wallacea region includes a vast number of islands:

Island GroupIslandsSignificance
Lesser Sunda IslandsLombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Timor, KomodoThe transition zone between Asia and Australia
SulawesiSulawesi, Buton, MunaThe largest island in Wallacea—a center of biodiversity
Maluku IslandsHalmahera, Seram, Buru, AmbonThe spice islands—deep water, unique species
Smaller IslandsSula, Banggai, TogianIsolated islands with endemic species

The Species of Wallacea

Wallacea is home to some of the most extraordinary and unique species on Earth:

SpeciesLocationSignificance
Komodo DragonKomodo, Rinca, FloresThe largest lizard on Earth—a relic of the Pleistocene
BabirusaSulawesiA pig-deer—an evolutionary oddity
AnoaSulawesiThe world’s smallest buffalo—a pygmy of the forest
MaleoSulawesiA bird that incubates its eggs in volcanic sand
TarsierSulawesi, Lesser Sunda IslandsOne of the world’s smallest primates
CuscusMaluku, SulawesiA marsupial—a survivor from the Australian side

Story Hook: The Naturalist Who Saw the Boundary

A young biologist arrives in the Maluku Islands to study the unique species of Wallacea. She has read the works of Alfred Russel Wallace, and she has come to see the boundary for herself. She travels to Lombok and stands on the beach, looking across the strait to the islands where the animals are different.

She realizes that the line that divides the world is not a line on a map—it is a process. It is the process of evolution, the process of isolation, the process of creation. The islands of Wallacea are not just places on a map; they are laboratories where nature has been experimenting for millions of years.

“The line is not a line. It is a boundary between worlds. On one side, the tigers and the elephants. On the other, the cockatoos and the dragons. The boundary is not a wall; it is a door—a door through which the world changes.” — A biologist, standing on the shore of Lombok

Visual Imagery

Wallacea is often depicted in photography and art as:

  • A map of the archipelago, with the Wallace Line cutting through the islands
  • A Komodo dragon, walking along a beach
  • The maleo bird, incubating its eggs in the volcanic sand
  • The tarsier, with its enormous eyes, peering out from the darkness
  • The deep water of the Lombok Strait, separating the two worlds
