Lombok Strait

The Lombok Strait is a deep-water strait between the Indonesian islands of Bali and Lombok. It marks the boundary of the Wallace Line, the biogeographical boundary that separates the Asian flora and fauna (Sunda Shelf) from the Australian flora and fauna (Sahul Shelf).

The strait is notable for its depth—unlike the Sunda Shelf, which is shallow and connects many of the islands, the Lombok Strait drops steeply to depths of over 1,000 meters. This deep water has made it a major shipping route for large vessels, as it can accommodate deep-draft ships that cannot pass through the shallower Malacca Strait.
