Balinese People

English (EN)

The Balinese (Balinese: Wong Bali, Indonesian: Suku Bali) are the majority ethnic group on the island of Bali, numbering approximately 4 million people. They are the most prominent practitioners of Hinduism in Indonesia, with their own distinct form of the religion known as Balinese Hinduism (Agama Hindu Dharma).

Religion: Balinese Hinduism

Balinese Hinduism is a unique synthesis of Indian Hinduism, Buddhism, and indigenous Balinese animism. It is distinct from Indian Hinduism in several ways:

  • The supreme deity is Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, conceived as the highest manifestation of the divine.
  • Daily rituals (canang sari) are offered in small palm-leaf baskets filled with flowers, rice, and incense.
  • The concept of Rwa Bhineda (the balance of opposing forces) is central to Balinese cosmology.

Rituals and Festivals

Balinese life is organized around a rich calendar of rituals:

  • Galungan – A major festival celebrating the victory of dharma over adharma, occurring every 210 days.
  • Nyepi – The Day of Silence, a 24-hour period of complete stillness marking the Balinese New Year.
  • Odalan – Temple anniversaries, held at every village temple according to the Balinese calendar.
  • Melasti – A purification ritual held at the sea to cleanse sacred objects.

Arts and Performance

Balinese culture is renowned for its vibrant arts:

  • Dance: Barong, Kecak, Legong, and the dance of the pendet are internationally recognized.
  • Music: Balinese gamelan has a faster, more percussive style than Javanese gamelan.
  • Wayang Kulit: While Javanese puppetry is more formal, Balinese shadow puppetry has its own distinctive style.
  • Painting and Sculpture: Balinese art, especially in Ubud, is famous for its intricate detail and vibrant colors.

Social Structure

Balinese society is organized around the concept of Desa, Kala, Patra (place, time, situation), emphasizing the importance of context. The society is structured into caste-like groups, similar to Hindu society in India.
