Usada
English (EN)
The Knowledge of Healing
Usada is the Balinese word for traditional medicine—but it is more than a word. It is a system, a body of knowledge written in the lontar (palm-leaf manuscripts) of the Balinese healers, passed down through generations of balian (traditional healers). It is a knowledge that does not separate the body from the spirit, the physical from the metaphysical, the remedy from the ritual.
The word usada is derived from the Sanskrit ausadhi, meaning “medicinal herb” or “remedy.” But in the Balinese context, usada encompasses not only herbal medicine but also the rituals, prayers, and spiritual practices that accompany the preparation and administration of remedies. To practice usada is to practice balance—balance between the visible and invisible worlds, between the body and the soul, between the individual and the cosmos.
The Origins of Usada
The origins of usada are both ancient and sacred. According to Balinese tradition, the knowledge of usada was revealed to the ancestors by the gods, particularly by Ida Sang Hyang Widhi (the Supreme God) and the Sapta Rsi (the seven sages). The knowledge was recorded in lontar manuscripts and passed down through the generations, preserved in the temples and the homes of the healers.
The usada manuscripts are among the oldest surviving texts in the archipelago. Written in the Kawi and Balinese scripts on palm leaves, they contain the collected wisdom of centuries of healers, botanists, and mystics.
The Structure of Usada
The usada tradition is vast, encompassing many different areas of knowledge:
| Category | Description |
|---|---|
| Usada Taru Pramana | The medicine of plants—the identification and use of medicinal herbs |
| Usada Ba | The medicine of incantations—the use of mantras and prayers in healing |
| Usada Sari | The medicine of essences—the extraction and preparation of active ingredients |
| Usada Kanda | The medicine of the organs—the treatment of specific body parts |
| Usada Buduh | The medicine of mental illness—the treatment of spiritual and psychological imbalances |
| Usada Rare | The medicine of children—pediatric care |
| Usada Leluhur | The medicine of the ancestors—rituals and offerings to honor the ancestors |
The Healing Philosophy
The philosophy of usada is built on several core principles:
| Principle | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Tri Hita Karana | Harmony with God, with others, and with nature—the foundation of health |
| Rwa Bhineda | The duality of existence—the balance of opposing forces |
| Sekala-Niskala | The visible and the invisible—the recognition that illness can have spiritual as well as physical causes |
| Catur Laksana | The four qualities of a good healer: knowledge, compassion, patience, and devotion |
The Healing Process
A typical usada healing session follows a structured process:
| Phase | Description |
|---|---|
| Diagnosis | The healer uses observation, palpation, and spiritual intuition to identify the cause of the illness |
| Ritual | The healer performs a purification ritual (melukat) to cleanse the patient and the space |
| Prayer | The healer recites mantras to invoke the blessings of the ancestors and the gods |
| Remedy | The healer prepares and administers the herbal remedy |
| Follow-up | The healer provides dietary and lifestyle advice to prevent recurrence |
The Role of the Balian
The balian is the practitioner of usada—a healer who is both a herbalist and a spiritual guide. The balian undergoes years of training, studying the lontar manuscripts, learning the properties of the herbs, and developing the spiritual discipline necessary to practice healing.
The balian is not just a doctor; they are a bridge between the human world and the spirit world. They diagnose not only through physical symptoms but through spiritual intuition, and they treat not only the body but also the soul.

Story Hook: The Manuscript That Could Not Be Read
A young Balinese woman, a student of traditional medicine, inherits a stack of lontar manuscripts from her grandmother, a balian who was known throughout the village. The manuscripts are old—the script is difficult to read, the language is archaic, and the pages are fragile. She tries to decipher the texts, but they resist her.
She consults an old priest, who tells her that the manuscripts are not just texts—they are spirits. They will not reveal their secrets to someone who does not understand the art of reading them. She must learn the language of the lontar—not just the script but the rasa, the inner meaning of the words.
She spends months studying the manuscripts, learning to hear the voice of the ancestors in the words. She discovers that the manuscripts contain not just remedies but stories—stories of the ancestors who discovered the herbs, stories of the spirits who guard the plants, stories of the rituals that must be performed.
“The lontar does not speak to everyone. It speaks only to those who are ready to listen. And to listen to the lontar is to listen to the voice of the ancestors.” — A Balinese priest
Visual Imagery
Usada is often depicted in art and photography as:
- A lontar manuscript, its leaves yellowed with age, its script faded but still legible
- A balian grinding herbs with a mortar and pestle
- The herbs of the usada tradition—roots, leaves, and flowers laid out on a wooden table
- A healing ritual, with the patient at the center and the balian chanting mantras
- The Balinese landscape—mountains, forests, and rice fields—where the herbs are gathered
