Temulawak—the “Java turmeric”—is a rhizome that grows in the volcanic soil of the archipelago, a golden root that has been used for centuries in the traditional medicine of the Javanese people. Its name comes from the Javanese words temu (to meet) and lawak (a type of turmeric), and it is one of the most important ingredients in the jamu tradition.
