Sasak People
English (EN)
The Sasak people (Sasak: Sasaq) are the indigenous and largest ethnic group of Lombok Island in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia[reference:46]. Numbering over 3 million[reference:47][reference:48], they constitute approximately 85% of Lombok’s population[reference:49][reference:50]. The Sasak are closely related to the Balinese in language and race, although the Sasak are predominantly Muslim while the Balinese are Hindu[reference:51].
Language
The Sasak speak the Sasak language, an Austronesian language closely related to the languages of Bali and [[sumbawa-island|Sumbawa】[reference:52]. Like Javanese and Balinese, Sasak contains speech levels — low, mid, high, and honorific vocabularies — that reflect social hierarchy and respect[reference:53]. The language serves as the primary means of communication in daily life, with a rich tradition of oral poetry (tembeq) and folk tales[reference:54][reference:55].
Religion: Wetu Telu and Wetu Lima
The Sasak are predominantly Muslim, but their practice of Islam is unique in the archipelago. They observe two forms of the religion[reference:56]:
| Form | Meaning | Practice |
|---|---|---|
| Wetu Lima (“Five Times”) | Orthodox Islam | Pray five times a day, following standard Islamic practice[reference:57] |
| Wetu Telu (“Three Times”) | Syncretic tradition | Pray three times a day, blending Islamic beliefs with pre-Islamic animist and ancestral traditions[reference:58][reference:59] |
Wetu Telu emerged during the reign of Kedatuan Bayan in the 14th century[reference:60]. Its followers recognize only three pillars of Islam (the two declarations of faith, prayer, and fasting) rather than the standard five[reference:61]. For many Sasak, Wetu Telu is considered a tradition rather than a separate religion[reference:62]. Adherents of Wetu Telu typically live in smaller villages, while Wetu Lima followers reside in larger settlements[reference:63].
History
Originally the only inhabitants of Lombok, the Sasak came under the political domination of Bali from the 18th century until 1895, when the Dutch conquered the island[reference:64]. Islam arrived in the area around the 15th century[reference:65], with the Sasak converting between the late 17th century under the influence of Pangeran Prapen (Sunan Prapen)[reference:66]. The Islamization of the Sasak is part of the broader Islamization corridor that transformed the archipelago’s religious landscape.
Culture and Traditions
The Sasak have a rich oral literary tradition, including lyric verse and prose folk tales[reference:67]. One of their most distinctive oral forms is tembeq, a traditional oral poetry (pantun) recited spontaneously in various social contexts[reference:68]. The Sasak also have a written literary tradition, with the earliest literature written in Javanese and including romantic and religious poetry, as well as original works such as local histories[reference:69].
Traditional Sasak society recognizes caste social divisions[reference:70], a legacy of Balinese influence. The kinship system is patrilineal[reference:71], and there is a tradition of sorong serah — a ceremonial exchange that reinforces social bonds and hierarchy[reference:72].
The Sasak are predominantly subsistence farmers, cultivating wet rice, coffee, vegetables, coconuts, bamboo, sugarcane, and pandanus[reference:73]. They live in villages of 5–20 families or in larger settlements with several thousand residents, with houses built around a kampu (religious compound) where ceremonies take place[reference:74].
Sasak People and the Dark Lines
| Dark Line | Connection |
|---|---|
| The Islamization Corridor | The Sasak conversion to Islam in the 17th century is a key moment in the Islamization corridor — the process by which the archipelago’s faith was transformed through trade and political influence. |
| The Mana Curse | The dual religious practice of Wetu Telu and Wetu Lima reflects the curse’s effect on spiritual life — the syncretic tradition (Wetu Telu) preserves older spiritual knowledge, while the orthodox tradition (Wetu Lima) represents the curse’s erasure of that knowledge. |
| The Fourth Realm | Lombok’s location across the Lombok Strait from Bali — a strait that marks the boundary between the Asian and Australian continental shelves[reference:75] — is also a boundary between realms. The Sasak, as the island’s indigenous people, are the guardians of that boundary. |
| The Three Realms | The Wetu Telu tradition — with its three daily prayers — mirrors the structure of the three realms. The tradition is a living memory of the cosmic order that the three-realms framework describes. |
Story Hook: The Third Prayer
Wetu Telu followers pray three times a day. But what if the third prayer is not a prayer at all — what if it is a gateway?
Imagine a story in which a young Sasak woman, raised in a Wetu Lima village, discovers that her grandmother was a Wetu Telu practitioner. She inherits her grandmother’s prayer beads — and with them, the ability to see what lies beyond the third prayer. She sees the spirits that the Wetu Telu tradition has always acknowledged, the ancestors who never left, and the hidden realm that the orthodox tradition has tried to erase.
She must decide: should she embrace the third prayer and the power it brings, or should she close the gate and protect her village from what lies on the other side?
“We pray three times because the ancestors taught us that the world has three layers. The first prayer is for the living. The second is for the dead. The third is for the ones who are neither.” — A Sasak Wetu Telu elder
Visual Imagery
The Sasak are often depicted in Indonesian art and media as:
- Farmers in the lush rice terraces of Lombok, with Mount Rinjani rising in the background
- Weavers creating intricate songket textiles — a tradition that is central to Sasak cultural identity[reference:76]
- In traditional attire — the peci (cap) and sarong for men, the kebaya and sarong for women
- In ceremonial contexts — the sorong serah exchange, the recitation of tembeq poetry, the rituals of Wetu Telu
