The Reformers of Islam

The Padri Movement was an Islamic reform movement in West Sumatra during the early 19th century, led by religious scholars seeking to purify the practice of Islam and challenge traditional adat (customary law). It evolved into the Padri War (1821–1837), a bloody conflict against the Dutch colonial forces and the Minangkabau traditional elites that reshaped the religious and political landscape of the region.

The Reform

The Padri movement sought to purify the practice of Islam in West Sumatra, challenging traditional adat customs that they viewed as un-Islamic. The movement called for the strict observance of Islamic law and the rejection of traditional practices.
