The Vow

Bhishma was born as Devavrata, the son of King Shantanu and the goddess Ganga. He was named Bhishma (“the terrible”) after taking a terrible vow: he renounced his claim to the throne, vowed lifelong celibacy, and pledged eternal loyalty to the king of Hastinapura. This vow made him the most powerful and respected figure in the Kuru dynasty—but also bound him to a course of action that would lead to tragedy.

The Tragic Duty

Bhishma’s vow of loyalty forced him to support Duryodhana and the Kauravas, even when he knew they were wrong. He was compelled to fight against the Pāṇḍavas—the heroes he had loved and trained—at the great battle of Kurukshetra. He fought not out of conviction, but out of duty.

The Death

Bhishma was felled by a volley of arrows from Arjuna, shot from behind the warrior Shikhandi. He fell to the ground, pierced by countless arrows, suspended in a bed of arrows (Shara Shayya). He lay there, awaiting the auspicious moment of his death—the winter solstice—for 58 days. Before dying, he delivered a long discourse on dharma, kingship, and duty, known as the Bhishma Parva.

Bhishma in Javanese Tradition

In Javanese wayang kulit, Bhishma is known as Bisma. He is portrayed as a wise, powerful, and tragic figure—a symbol of the conflict between duty and love. His story is often performed in wayang cycles, highlighting the tragedy of a man who must fight against his own heart for the sake of his vow.

Story Hook: The Grandfather’s Tears

On the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Bhishma lies on his bed of arrows. He has been waiting for his death for many days, held by the power of his vow, waiting for the auspicious moment. The Pāṇḍavas gather around him—the heroes he trained, the grandsons he loves.

They ask him: “Grandfather, why did you fight against us? You loved us. You taught us. Why did you choose the Kauravas?”

Bhishma smiles, his eyes filled with tears: “I chose not the Kauravas, but my vow. A vow, once taken, cannot be broken. I am not fighting because I believe in Duryodhana’s cause—I am fighting because I believed in my word. That is the tragedy of a vow. It binds you, even when your heart is elsewhere.”

“I am Bhishma, the terrible. But I am not terrible because I am cruel. I am terrible because I am bound. My vow is my strength and my curse. It has made me the greatest warrior of my age. And it has made me fight against the ones I love.”
— Bhishma, on the bed of arrows
