The Muller Mountains (also known as the Cemaru Highlands) are a rugged mountain range located on the border between East Kalimantan and West Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo. They form the source of the Mahakam River—the second-longest river in Indonesia—and serve as the vital watershed for much of the island’s interior.

Geography

The Muller Mountains are part of the central highlands of Borneo, a sparsely populated region covered in dense tropical montane rainforest. The mountains are rugged and difficult to access, which has preserved much of their natural biodiversity.

The mountains are home to extraordinary biodiversity, including:

The Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus)
The Bornean clouded leopard (Neofelis diardi borneensis)
Numerous endemic bird species

Cultural Significance

The Muller Mountains are the cultural heartland of the Dayak peoples. In Dayak cosmology, the mountains are the source of life—where the rivers begin, where the spirits dwell, and where the ancestors reside.

Threats

The mountains face threats from deforestation and mining, as well as the expanding frontier of oil palm plantations.
