West Kalimantan is a province on the island of Borneo, with its capital at Pontianak—the only city in the world situated exactly on the equator. The province covers approximately 147,307 square kilometers and is bordered by the Malaysian state of Sarawak to the north and east.

Geography

West Kalimantan is dominated by the Kapuas River—the longest river in Indonesia, flowing 1,140 kilometers from the interior mountains to the South China Sea. The river is the province’s lifeline, used for transportation, trade, and fishing.

Culture

The province is home to the Dayak peoples, who inhabit the interior, as well as significant Malay and Chinese populations along the coast. The Chinese community, primarily Hakka and Teochew, has played a major role in West Kalimantan’s economy since the 19th century.
