Dayak People
English (EN)
The Dayak are the indigenous peoples of the island of Kalimantan, numbering approximately 3 million people. They are composed of over 200 distinct sub-groups, each with their own language, customs, and traditions. The Dayak are known for their deep connection to the rainforest and their rich cultural heritage.
Longhouses (Rumah Panjang)
The traditional Dayak settlement is the longhouse, a communal structure that houses an entire extended family or clan. The longhouse is not just a dwelling; it is the center of community life, governance, and spiritual activity.
Religion and Spirituality
Historically, the Dayak practiced a form of animism known as Kaharingan. While many Dayak have converted to Christianity or Islam, many continue to practice Kaharingan traditions alongside their new faith. The Dayak believe in the presence of spirits in nature, and rituals are performed to maintain harmony with the spirit world.
Arts and Crafts
Dayak culture is famous for its material culture:
- Woodcarving: Intricate patterns and spirit figures carved from ironwood and other local timbers.
- Weaving: Traditional textiles with distinctive motifs, often using natural dyes.
- Tattoos: Traditional Dayak tattoos were historically symbols of status, achievement, and protection.
Dayak Rituals
Dayak rituals include:
- Tiwah – A secondary burial ceremony of the Ngaju Dayak
- Kwangkai – The head-hunting ritual of the Iban Dayak (now largely discontinued)
- Gawai Dayak – A harvest festival celebrated by various Dayak communities
Dayak in the Modern Era
Today, Dayak communities face challenges of deforestation, land rights, and preserving their languages. They have become increasingly politically active, advocating for indigenous rights and environmental protection in Kalimantan.
