Pangeran Antasari

English (EN)

Pangeran Antasari (c. 1809–1862) was a 19th-century Banjar prince who led a major resistance movement against Dutch colonial rule in southern Borneo (present-day South and Central Kalimantan). The war he led, known as the Banjar War or the Antasari War (1859–1863), was one of the most significant anti-colonial uprisings in the archipelago during the 19th century. On March 27, 1968, he was declared a National Hero of Indonesia.

Early Life

Antasari was born into the royal family of the Banjar Sultanate, a kingdom that had controlled the trade routes of southeastern Borneo for centuries. The sultanate, centered in Banjarmasin, had been under increasing Dutch pressure since the early 19th century. The Dutch had forced successive sultans to sign treaties that eroded Banjar sovereignty, culminating in the 1826 treaty that placed the sultanate under Dutch “protection.”

The Banjar Sultanate was a maritime power with a mixed population of Banjar Muslims and Dayak communities in the interior. The political system was marked by a complex relationship between the Muslim coastal elite and the Dayak indigenous groups, who were both allies and subjects of the sultanate.

The Road to War

The trigger for Antasari’s rebellion was the Dutch interference in Banjar succession. In 1857, Sultan Adam, who had maintained a fragile peace with the Dutch, died. The Dutch ignored the legitimate successor, Prince Hidayatullah, and recognized instead a cousin, Prince Tamjidillah, who was more favorable to Dutch interests. This blatant manipulation of the succession alienated the Banjar nobility and united them against the Dutch.

Antasari, who had initially supported Hidayatullah, emerged as the leader of the resistance. He was a skilled military leader who understood the terrain of Borneo—a landscape of dense rainforests, rivers, and swamps that favored a guerrilla style of warfare.

The War (1859–1863)

Antasari’s war began in April 1859. It was fought not as a conventional war but as a guerrilla war—with small bands of fighters attacking Dutch outposts, ambushing patrols, and then melting back into the jungle.

PhasePeriodKey Events
Phase 1: The UprisingApril–May 1859A series of coordinated attacks against Dutch positions and the sultanate’s capital, Martapura. Antasari declared that the war was a perang sabil (holy war) against the Christian colonizers.
Phase 2: The Dutch Counteroffensive1859–1861The Dutch reinforced their garrison in Banjarmasin and launched a series of punitive expeditions into the interior. The dense jungle, however, made it difficult for Dutch forces to engage Antasari’s fighters.
Phase 3: The Resistance Continues1861–1862The war settled into a protracted stalemate. Dutch control was limited to coastal strongholds; the interior remained under Antasari’s control. Antasari died in October 1862 due to illness, likely cholera or a related disease.
Phase 4: The End of the War1863After Antasari’s death, the resistance continued under his son, Pangeran Nata. The Dutch, however, began to gain the upper hand, capturing key strongholds. In 1863, Pangeran Nata surrendered, and the war formally ended.

The Legacy of the War

The Banjar War, though ultimately unsuccessful, had profound consequences:

ConsequenceDescription
Dutch ControlThe war ended Banjar sovereignty. The Dutch abolished the Banjar Sultanate and directly administered the region from Banjarmasin.
The Spirit of ResistanceAntasari’s war became a symbol of resistance against colonialism. His willingness to unite Dayak and Banjar, Muslim and non-Muslim, in a common struggle inspired later nationalist movements.
Guerrilla WarfareThe war demonstrated the effectiveness of guerrilla tactics against a more powerful, conventional colonial army. This lesson would be remembered and applied in the Indonesian National Revolution (1945–1949).
Dayak-Banjar UnityThe war established a precedent of unity between the coastal Muslim Banjar and the interior Dayak communities—a unity that would shape the political landscape of Kalimantan in the 20th century.

Story Hook: The Prince Who Never Died

Antasari died in 1862, but what if he did not die? What if his “death” was a fiction—a cover for a different fate?

Imagine a story in which Antasari did not succumb to illness but retreated into the jungle to continue the fight in secret. He became a figure of myth—a prince who lives in the forest, waiting for the right moment to return. In the 1940s, during the Japanese occupation and the Indonesian National Revolution, a figure emerges in Kalimantan who claims to be Antasari’s descendant—or Antasari himself, still alive after 80 years.

Is he a ghost? A fraud? Or the real thing—a prince who tapped into the Fourth Realm and found a way to survive?

“They said I died in the jungle. But a prince does not die in the jungle. He becomes part of it. The trees remember me. The rivers carry my name. And when the time comes, I will return.” — Pangeran Antasari, in a Dayak-Banjar oral tradition

Visual Imagery

Pangeran Antasari is often depicted in Indonesian history books and art as:

  • A regal figure in traditional Banjar royal attire—a peci (cap), baju koko (long tunic), and a kain sarong
  • Holding a kris (dagger) or a tombak (spear)—symbols of his warrior-king status
  • In scenes of battle—leading his soldiers through the dense jungles of Borneo, rivers as the highways of war
  • In modern iconography, his image is often paired with the text of his declaration of holy war
