Boedi Oetomo

Budi Utomo (in the original spelling: Boedi Oetomo, meaning “Noble Endeavor”) was the first nationalist organization in the Dutch East Indies, founded on 20 May 1908. It was established by Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo and a group of Javanese students, and is widely considered the catalyst for the Indonesian national awakening.

Origins
Budi Utomo was founded in the context of the Ethical Policy, which had created a new educated class of Indonesians. The organization aimed to promote Javanese culture and education, but its significance quickly grew beyond cultural concerns.
The Congress
In 1908, Budi Utomo held its first congress in Yogyakarta, which marked a turning point in the development of Indonesian nationalism.
Legacy
Budi Utomo is commemorated annually on 20 May as National Awakening Day (Hari Kebangkitan Nasional) in Indonesia. It is considered the beginning of the organized nationalist movement.
