Sumpah Pemuda

The Youth Pledge (Sumpah Pemuda) was a historic declaration made on 28 October 1928 by young Indonesian nationalists at the Second Youth Congress in Batavia (now Jakarta). It proclaimed the vision of a unified Indonesia: “one nation, one language, one people.”

The Three Proclamations
The Youth Pledge consisted of three declarations:
- One nation: We, the sons and daughters of Indonesia, acknowledge one nation, the Indonesian nation
- One language: We, the sons and daughters of Indonesia, acknowledge one language, the Indonesian language
- One people: We, the sons and daughters of Indonesia, acknowledge one people, the Indonesian people
The Congress
The Second Youth Congress was a gathering of youth organizations from across the archipelago. It was preceded by the First Youth Congress (1926) and was part of the growing national awakening movement.
Significance
The Youth Pledge is considered the birth of Indonesian national consciousness. For the first time, young nationalists from different ethnic, religious, and regional backgrounds declared themselves to be one nation—Indonesia.
Legacy
The Youth Pledge is commemorated annually in Indonesia on 28 October as Youth Pledge Day (Hari Sumpah Pemuda). It remains a powerful symbol of Indonesian unity.
