The Palapa Oath

According to the Pararaton (Book of Kings), Gajah Mada made a solemn vow: he would not eat any food containing spices (palapa) until he had unified the entire archipelago under Majapahit rule. This oath—the Palapa Oath—became the founding myth of Indonesian unity.
