The Lion of Light

The Barong is the most sacred and iconic mythical creature in Balinese culture. He is a benevolent spirit in the form of a lion-like creature, the king of the good spirits (bhuta kala), and the eternal opponent of the witch Rangda. The legendary battle between Barong and Rangda—performed in the famous Barong dance—represents the cosmic struggle between good and evil, order and chaos.

The Two Forms of Barong

In Balinese tradition, there are several forms of Barong:

  • Barong Ket: The most common form—a lion-like creature with a long, flowing mane, representing the masculine, protective force. This is the Barong most often seen in dance performances.
  • Barong Landung: A larger, more human-like form, representing a different aspect of the protective spirit.

The Legend of Calon Arang

The central story of the Barong is found in the legend of Calon Arang, a widow from Girah who mastered the art of black magic. She sought revenge against the king of Bali for refusing to marry her daughter. She summoned the forces of evil, causing a plague and death across the land. The king, advised by a priest, commanded his subjects to dance with the Barong. The Barong, in turn, summoned his own forces of good. The battle between Barong and the forces of Calon Arang (embodied by Rangda) ensued. In the end, Barong prevailed, and the kingdom was saved. This story is the foundation of the Barong dance.

The Barong Dance

The Barong dance (tari Barong) is one of Bali’s most famous cultural performances. It tells the story of the battle between Barong and Rangda. The performance features:

  • Elaborate masks and costumes
  • Gamelan music accompanying the action
  • Dancers who enter a trance state (kerauhan), embodying the spirits
  • The final scene, where Barong and Rangda are locked in a stalemate—the balance of good and evil

Sacred Symbolism

The Barong is not merely a character in a dance—he is a sacred symbol. His image is often found in temples and homes, serving as a talisman of protection against evil spirits. The mask of the Barong is considered sacred and is kept in temples, brought out only for ceremonies.

Barong and the Dark Lines

Dark LineConnection
The Three RealmsThe Barong is a mediator between the Three Realms. He exists in the Middle Realm of humanity, protecting villagers from the forces of the Lower Realm (the demonic spirits) while drawing power from the Upper Realm of the gods.
The Fourth RealmThe Barong dance is a Fourth Realm event—a moment when the boundaries between worlds become permeable. The dancers enter a trance state, becoming vessels for spirits. The Barong itself is a Fourth Realm being—a creature that exists between the physical and the spiritual.
The Mana CurseThe curse weakened humanity’s connection to the world. The Barong can be interpreted as a counter-spell—a protective spirit that fights against the forces of chaos and destruction. The Barong dance is a ritual act of restoration, an attempt to reweave the spiritual fabric of the community.
The 210-Day ContractThe Barong dance is often performed during temple festivals (odalan) that follow the 210-day Pawukon calendar. The story of the battle between Barong and Rangda is a cyclical narrative, repeated in performances that echo the rhythms of the ancient calendar.

Story Hook: The Mask That Dances

In a village in Gianyar, the sacred mask of the Barong has been kept in the temple for generations. It is only brought out once a year, for the odalan (temple anniversary) ceremony. The dancer who will wear the mask must be a man of pure character, who has fasted and prepared spiritually. A young man named Wayan is chosen for the first time. He has never worn the mask before. His father, who wore it before him, warns him: “The mask is not a decoration. It is a living spirit. When you wear it, you are not yourself. You are Barong. You will feel his strength, his courage, his joy. But you will also feel his burden—the weight of protecting the village, the responsibility of fighting against the darkness.” On the night of the ceremony, Wayan puts on the mask. He feels a surge of power. He is no longer Wayan—he is Barong.

“When I wear the mask, I become something more than myself. I become the protector of the village, the guardian of the spirits, the enemy of the witch. I dance not for the people, but for the gods. I dance to keep the balance of the world.” — Wayan, a Barong dancer

Visual Imagery

The Barong is often depicted in art, sculpture, and performance as:

  • A lion-like creature with a long, flowing mane of white or gold, intricate carved mask, and elaborate headdress.
  • The Barong dance—two dancers moving inside the heavy costume, their movements synchronized to the rhythm of the gamelan.
  • The mask of the Barong—a sacred object, kept in temples, its eyes gleaming with supernatural power.
  • A temple relief showing the battle between Barong and Rangda.
  • The Barong and Rangda fighting—a scene of cosmic struggle, frozen in stone or wood.
