Krama is the highest and most refined speech level in the Javanese language—a linguistic system that encodes social hierarchy, respect, and emotional distance through the choice of vocabulary, affixes, and grammatical structures. Alongside Ngoko (the informal level) and Madya (the middle level), Krama forms the three-tiered speech level system that is one of the most distinctive features of Javanese culture.
The word krama itself derives from the Sanskrit krama, meaning “order” or “step”—reflecting the hierarchical nature of the system. Krama is not merely a linguistic form; it is a social practice, a moral discipline, and a philosophical statement about the nature of human relationships.
The Three Speech Levels
Javanese has three primary speech levels:
