Tata
English (EN)
The Order That Makes Harmony Possible
Tata is the Javanese principle of order—the arrangement of things in their proper place, the structure that makes harmony possible, the recognition that without order, there is only chaos. It is the foundation of the Javanese understanding of the universe, the principle that governs the relationship between the individual and the cosmos, between the human and the divine, between the self and the community.
The word tata appears throughout the Javanese language, in many forms and contexts. It means “arrangement,” “order,” “system,” and “rule.” But in Javanese philosophy, it means something deeper: it is the structure of existence itself. The world is not random; it is ordered. The cosmos is not chaotic; it follows a pattern. And human life is not meaningless; it has a place in the larger order of things.
Tata in Javanese Cosmology
In Javanese cosmology, the universe is ordered according to a hierarchy of realms—the Three Realms of the Upper Realm of the gods, the Middle Realm of humans, and the Lower Realm of spirits and ancestors. Each realm has its own order, its own rules, its own place in the larger structure.
The tata of the cosmos is reflected in the tata of human life. The social hierarchy, the ritual calendar, the arrangement of the house, the order of the meal—all of these are expressions of the cosmic order. To live in accordance with tata is to live in harmony with the universe.
| Realm | Order | Expression in Human Life |
|---|---|---|
| Upper Realm | Divine order | Prayer, ritual, and devotion |
| Middle Realm | Social order | Hierarchy, propriety, and community |
| Lower Realm | Ancestral order | Memory, tradition, and respect |
Tata in Javanese Society
In Javanese society, tata is the principle that governs social relations. It is the recognition that everyone has a place, and that the place is determined by age, status, gender, and relationship. To violate the tata is to violate the order of the universe.
The tata of society is expressed in:
- The speech levels that encode social hierarchy
- The rituals of the selametan that reinforce community bonds
- The architecture of the joglo house, with its spatial hierarchy
- The order of seating, eating, and speaking in social gatherings
The Javanese concept of tata is closely related to Krama—the principle of propriety. Krama is the practice of tata, the way that the order is maintained through proper behavior.
Tata and the Self
Tata is not just about the external world; it is also about the inner world. The self must be ordered, just as the cosmos and society are ordered. The Javanese practice of rasa—the cultivation of inner feeling—is a way of establishing order within the self.
The self is understood as having three aspects:
- Raga — the body, which must be disciplined
- Rasa — the feelings, which must be balanced
- Jiwa — the soul, which must be connected to the divine
To have tata is to have all three in harmony.
Tata and the Javanese Philosophy of Life
Tata is the first principle of Javanese philosophy. It is the foundation on which all other principles are built:

Story Hook: The Village That Lost Its Order
In a village in Central Java, the people have forgotten the old ways. They no longer perform the rituals of the selametan, no longer observe the rules of krama, no longer respect the hierarchy of the generations. The village is in chaos—disputes erupt, families split, the rice fields lie fallow.
An old woman, the last keeper of the village’s traditions, gathers the children and begins to teach them the principles of tata. She tells them that the world is ordered, that everything has its place, and that the only way to find peace is to find their place in the order of things. The children begin to practice tata—the speech levels, the rituals, the respect for the elders. And slowly, the village begins to heal.
“Tata is not a rule. It is a recognition—a recognition that the world is not random, that everything has its place, and that our place is to be found in the order that the ancestors have left us.” — A Javanese grandmother
Visual Imagery
Tata is often depicted in art and photography as:
- The layout of a Javanese village, with the pendopo at the center and the houses arranged around it
- The pattern of a batik cloth, its design ordered and symmetrical
- The hierarchy of the Javanese language—three levels, each with its own place
- The cosmic axis of Yogyakarta—Mount Merapi, the palace, and the South Sea
- A traditional Javanese meal, with the dishes arranged in their proper order
