Pulau Seram

The Island of the Ancestral Spirits

Seram Island is the second-largest island in the Maluku archipelago, covering approximately 17,100 square kilometers. It lies north of Ambon, separated by the Seram Sea, and is surrounded by the Molucca Sea to the west, the Seram Sea to the south, and the Banda Sea to the east. It is a land of rugged mountains, dense rainforests, and hidden valleys—a place where the modern world has barely touched the interior, and where the spirits of the ancestors are still said to dwell.

The island’s interior is dominated by a central mountain range that runs east to west, with the highest peak, Mount Binaiya, rising to 3,027 meters. The mountains are covered in dense tropical rainforest, cut through by fast-flowing rivers, and home to some of the most unique wildlife in the archipelago. Seram is part of the Wallacea biogeographical region, a transition zone between Asian and Australian ecosystems, and is a sanctuary of evolution.

The Sacred Forests

For the indigenous peoples of Seram—the Alfur, the Nuaulu, and other groups—the island is not just a place to live; it is a landscape of spirits. The forests are inhabited by nitu—ancestral spirits that watch over the land, the rivers, and the people who live on them. The mountains are the dwelling places of the gods, and the caves are the gates to the underworld.

The Nuaulu people, in particular, have maintained their traditional beliefs and practices. They practice a form of ancestor worship that is woven into the fabric of their daily lives. The rituals are performed in the forests, at sacred sites that have been used for generations. The forest is not a resource; it is a relative.

The Spice That Opened the Island

Seram was part of the spice trade that connected the Maluku islands to the rest of the world. Cloves and nutmeg grew on the island, and the sultanates of Ternate and Tidore claimed authority over its coasts. The Portuguese arrived in the 16th century, followed by the Dutch in the 17th. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) established a presence on the island, but they were never able to fully control the interior. The island was too vast, the forests too dense, and the people too resistant.

The Dutch built forts on the coast, but the interior remained independent. The people of Seram resisted colonial rule for centuries, and the island became a refuge for those fleeing the violence of the spice trade.

The Forgotten Treasures

Seram’s rainforests are home to some of the most unique species in the world. The island’s birds are particularly remarkable—the Seram cockatoo, the Moluccan king parrot, and the purple-naped lory are found nowhere else. The island’s rivers are home to freshwater fish that have evolved in isolation for thousands of years.

The island’s forests are also home to medicinal plants that have been used by the indigenous peoples for centuries. The knowledge of these plants is passed down through oral traditions, from generation to generation.

Story Hook: The Forest That Remembers

A young Nuaulu woman is the last of her line to know the old ways. She has been trained in the rituals of the ancestors, the naming of the plants, the reading of the signs. She walks through the forest, and she hears the voices of the spirits in the rustle of the leaves.

A development project threatens to clear the forest that her people have inhabited for centuries. The government offers money for the land, and many of the villagers are tempted. But the young woman knows that the forest is not just a collection of trees—it is a memory. It is the memory of the ancestors, the memory of the spirits, the memory of the people who have lived on this land for longer than anyone can remember.

“The forest does not forget. It remembers the feet that walked through it, the hands that touched it, the voices that spoke to it. When you cut the forest, you cut the memory. And when the memory is gone, the people are gone too.” — A Nuaulu elder
