Taman Nasional Gunung Leuser
English (EN)
The Last Great Forest of Sumatra
Gunung Leuser National Park is one of the most biodiverse and ecologically significant protected areas in Southeast Asia. Located in northern Sumatra, straddling the border of Aceh and North Sumatra provinces, the park covers an area of approximately 1,092,692 hectares (roughly 7,927 km²)[reference:0]. It was established in 1980 as one of Indonesia’s first five national parks[reference:2][reference:3].
The park is named after Mount Leuser, one of the highest peaks in the Barisan Mountains, standing at 3,119 meters. Alongside Kerinci Seblat National Park and Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, it forms the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra, a UNESCO World Heritage site inscribed in 2004[reference:6].
Geography and Ecosystems
The park is characterized by steep, almost inaccessible mountainous terrain[reference:7]. The Alas River runs through the heart of the park, dividing it into eastern and western halves[reference:8]. Altitudes range from 0 meters in the Kluet area of South Aceh to over 3,000 meters on the highest peaks[reference:9].
The park encompasses a remarkable diversity of habitat types[reference:10][reference:11]:
| Ecosystem Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Lowland Evergreen Dipterocarp Forest | Dense, species-rich forest at lower elevations |
| Lower and Upper Montane Forest | Cloud forests at higher altitudes |
| Peat Swamp Forest | Wetland ecosystems with unique flora |
| Forest Over Limestone | Karst formations with endemic species |
| Sub-alpine Meadows and Heathlands | High-altitude grasslands |
| Freshwater Lakes and Rivers | Aquatic ecosystems, including the Alas River |
| Sulphur Mineral Pools | Geothermal features |
Biodiversity
Gunung Leuser National Park is a global biodiversity hotspot. According to MacKinnon and MacKinnon (1986), it has the highest conservation contribution score of any protected area in the Indo-Malaya region[reference:12].
| Taxa | Count | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Plant Species | 4,000–10,000 | Including 17 endemic genera[reference:13] |
| Mammal Species | 129–200+ | 65% of Sumatra’s mammal species[reference:14] |
| Bird Species | 380–580 | 36 of 50 Sundaland endemic bird species[reference:15] |
| Reptile Species | 103 | — |
| Amphibian Species | 35 | — |
The “Big Four”
Gunung Leuser is the only place on Earth where four iconic large mammals coexist in the wild: the Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus), Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis), and Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii)[reference:16][reference:17]. It is also the last place where leopards coexist alongside these species[reference:18].
Unique Flora
The park is home to some of the world’s most remarkable plants[reference:19][reference:20]:
| Species | Description |
|---|---|
| **[[rafflesia | Rafflesia arnoldii]]** |
| **[[amorphophallus-titanum | Amorphophallus titanium]]** |
| Daunpayung Raksasa (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons) | A giant palm with enormous, umbrella-like leaves |
| Rhizanthes zippelnii | A rare parasitic plant related to Rafflesia |
Other Wildlife
Other notable species found in the park include: siamang (Symphalangus syndactylus), white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar), Thomas leaf monkey (Presbytis thomasi), slow loris, pig-tailed and long-tailed macaques, clouded leopard, Malay sun bear, and sambar deer[reference:21][reference:22].
Research and Conservation
The park is an important natural laboratory for conservation, education, and scientific research[reference:23]. The Ketambe Orangutan Research Station, established in 1971 by Dr. Herman D. Rijksen in Southeast Aceh, is one of the world’s longest-running field sites for orangutan research[reference:24][reference:25]. In 1973, a rehabilitation center was also established at Bahorok in Langkat[reference:26].
The park faces challenges including habitat loss, illegal logging, poaching, and encroachment. Conservation efforts focus on protecting the four flagship species and engaging local communities in sustainable resource management[reference:27].

Story Hook: The Forest That Remembers
In the dense rainforest of Gunung Leuser, an old dukun (shaman) from a nearby village knows the forest better than anyone. He has walked its trails for seventy years, learned the names of every tree, every flower, every bird. He knows the places where the spirits dwell and the paths that should not be taken.
A team of foreign researchers arrives, seeking to document the park’s biodiversity. They have drones, GPS, and advanced equipment. But the old dukun tells them that the forest cannot be mapped by technology alone—it must be felt.
He takes them to a grove of Rafflesia, where the world’s largest flower blooms. He tells them that the flower does not bloom by chance—it blooms when the spirits of the forest are pleased. The researchers dismiss this as superstition. But when their equipment fails and they become lost in the forest, it is the old dukun who finds them—guided not by maps, but by the whispers of the forest itself.
“The forest is not a collection of trees. It is a living thing. It breathes. It remembers. And if you listen closely, it will tell you its secrets.” — A dukun of the Leuser forest
