Trunyan is a traditional village on the shores of Lake Batur in Bali, home to the Bali Aga people. The Burial Custom
In Trunyan, the dead are not cremated, as is customary in Balinese Hinduism. Instead, they are placed under a sacred taru menyan tree, which is believed to absorb the odor of decomposition. The bodies are simply placed on the ground, covered with a cloth, and left to decompose naturally.
The Bali Aga
Trunyan is home to the Bali Aga, the indigenous Balinese people who inhabited the island before the arrival of Hinduism from Java. They have preserved their ancient customs and beliefs.
