Angin Bayu
English (EN)
Overview
Angin Bayu — “Wind’s Child” — is a legendary figure of the Nusantara cosmos. He is the one who was born with the gifts of the gods, who was destined for greatness, who was cursed by the priesthood, and who spends his life serving the cosmic balance without ever being allowed to claim a place within it.
He is a threshold figure — standing between the realms, between the gods and humanity, between blessing and curse. He is not a hero in the conventional sense, because he is not allowed to be one. He is not a villain, because his heart is true. He is a tragic servant — one who serves a cause that does not acknowledge him.
His name — Angin (wind) + Bayu (the wind god) — connects him to the wind itself, the force that moves between all things, never settling, never owned, always present.
Origin
Angin Bayu was born in the aftermath of the verdict-of-severance, during the generation when the boundaries between the realms had just been sealed. He was the son of a village healer and his wife, born with a distinctive mark: a faint crescent on his chest, like the moon of dewi ratih.
From childhood, he showed extraordinary abilities:
| Age | Ability | Witnessed By |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Healed a dying goat with his touch | Village elder |
| 7 | Spoke with the spirit of the mountain | The mountain’s guardian |
| 10 | Predicted a volcanic eruption | The village priest |
| 12 | Called rain during a drought | The entire village |
| 14 | Communed with the dead | The royal court |
The word spread. Angin Bayu was no ordinary child; he was a gifted one — blessed by dewi ratih (the goddess of the moon) and favored by the gods. The priesthood heard of him, and they were divided:
- Some saw him as a sign — the return of the old powers.
- Others saw him as a threat — a human who could bypass the priests’ authority.
- A few saw him as a tool — a pawn to be used in the cosmic game.
The Rescue
When Angin Bayu was seventeen, a group of village children were trapped in a cave on the slopes of merapi, during a period of volcanic unrest. The priests refused to help — the cave was sacred, and entering it without ritual preparation would offend the spirits.
Angin Bayu did not hesitate.
He entered the cave alone, found the children, and led them out. But in the darkness of the cave, he encountered something else: a wound in the fabric of the realms — a place where the Fourth Realm had pressed through the seal. He did not know what it was, but he knew it was wrong. He reached out to touch it, to understand it.
The seal reacted to his touch. The cave trembled. A blast of raw spiritual energy erupted from the wound, striking Angin Bayu across the chest. He fell, unconscious.
The Curse
When Angin Bayu awoke, the gods and the priesthood had already convened. The verdict was swift and unanimous: he had touched the forbidden. Whether out of ignorance or hubris, he had violated the seal — and the seal was the foundation of cosmic order.
But the punishment could not be death. The village had witnessed his rescue, and the people saw him as a hero. Killing him would cause unrest. Instead, the priesthood proposed a more elegant punishment:
“Let him live — but let him never be able to serve the cosmic order from within.”
The curse took three forms:
| Curse | Effect | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Blinding | He would never be able to see the gods directly, nor be seen by them | He is cut off from the Upper Realm |
| 2. Binding | Every act of service would be met with pain — his gift would hurt him every time he used it | Service is sacrifice for him |
| 3. Banishing | He would never be allowed to rest in any single place, because the ground would reject him if he stayed too long | He is forever a wanderer |
The curse was delivered by Batara Guru himself, acting on behalf of the priesthood. Angin Bayu was branded with the mark of the curse: a faint scar across his chest, over the crescent that had marked him at birth. The crescent now had a shadow — the sign that he was blessed but broken.
The Life of Angin Bayu
After the curse, Angin Bayu became a wanderer. He could not stay in any village for more than a few days before the ground began to tremble beneath his feet. He could not enter any temple — the gods had closed their doors to him. He could not marry, because the touch of a mortal brought him pain.
But he could still help. His gift remained — the ability to see the spiritual world, to heal, to communicate with the forces of nature. Every time he used it, he experienced pain. Every time he healed someone, he was wounded. Every time he served the cosmic balance, he was punished.
He served anyway. He did not serve because he was good. He served because he knew that if he did not, others would suffer.
| Act of Service | Cost to Him |
|---|---|
| Healed a village during a plague | Lost three days of sight |
| Calmed a volcanic eruption | Burned his hands, scarred for life |
| Averted a war by speaking truth | Lost the ability to speak for a full cycle (210 days) |
| Guided a soul to the Under Realm | Walked with a limp for seven years |
His service is not driven by hope for redemption. He knows he will never be un-cursed. He serves because he loves the world — not as a duty, not as a faith, but as an instinct.
Angin Bayu and the Dark Lines
The Fourth Realm
Angin Bayu is the only human who has touched the Fourth Realm directly — not through ritual, not through vision, but physically. He touched the wound in the fabric of the realms, and the seal reacted. This experience is both his curse and his gift: he understands the Fourth Realm in a way that no other human does, but he also carries its mark.
Some believe that when the 210-day-contract expires, Angin Bayu will be the one to decide whether the Fourth Realm is sealed again or opened permanently.
The Mana Curse
The mana-curse was intended to reduce humanity’s spiritual capacity. Angin Bayu is proof that the curse is not absolute — he still carries the gift, even though it costs him. His existence is a rebellion against the curse, not by fighting it, but by enduring it.
The 210-Day Contract
Angin Bayu’s wanderings follow the 210-day-contract’s rhythm. He cannot stay in one place for more than a few days — but he can travel, and his travels track the pulse of the contract. He is a living seismograph, a walking reminder of the contract’s time.
The Verdict of Severance
The verdict-of-severance sealed the boundaries between realms. Angin Bayu touched the wound in those boundaries — the only place where the seal was broken. He is a product of the verdict’s failure, and a reminder that the verdict did not fully succeed.
Angin Bayu and Other Figures
| Figure | Relationship |

| Tri Netra | Fellow threshold-walker. Tri Netra watches; Angin Bayu serves. They are not allies, but they acknowledge each other. |
| Hanuman | Hanuman is free; Angin Bayu is bound. Hanuman serves by choice; Angin Bayu serves by necessity. |
| Calon Arang | She was cursed by the priesthood for her power; he was cursed for his touch. They understand each other’s pain — but she chose to curse back, while he chose to serve anyway. |
| Batara Guru | The one who cursed him. Angin Bayu does not hate him; he accepts the curse as part of the cosmic order. But he does not forgive. |
