The Kampung is the most common and widespread form of traditional Javanese house—the dwelling of the common people. The term kampung itself refers both to the architectural form and to the village or community that surrounds it, reflecting the deep connection between Javanese domestic architecture and communal life.
Unlike the aristocratic Joglo with its towering central roof, the Kampung is characterized by its modest proportions and simple gable roof. It is a house of humility, built to serve the needs of a family and its community, embodying the Javanese values of andhap asor (humility) and rukun (social harmony).
The Kampung Form
The defining feature of the Kampung is its simple gable roof (atap kampung), which slopes down from a central ridge to the eaves. The roof is typically made of thatch, bamboo, or tiles, and is supported by a wooden frame.
