The Golden Age
The Gelgel Kingdom emerged after the fall of Majapahit. Majapahit refugees brought Javanese Hindu culture to Bali, and Gelgel became the center of a new Balinese civilization. The kingdom expanded its influence across Bali and beyond, establishing trade and diplomatic relations with other kingdoms.
Culture and Religion
Gelgel was a period of cultural and religious flourishing. The kingdom built temples, developed the Balinese Hindu tradition, and created a rich artistic heritage that continues to influence Balinese culture.
The Decline
In the 17th century, Gelgel declined and was replaced by the rival Klungkung kingdom. The division of Balinese political power into multiple kingdoms began.

Story Hook: The Refugees’ Legacy
After the fall of Majapahit, refugees fled to Bali. They brought with them the traditions of the old kingdom—the literature, the art, the rituals. Gelgel became the new center of Javanese-Hindu culture. A Balinese priest said: “We have lost our homeland, but we have not lost our faith. In Bali, we will build a new Jerusalem—a new kingdom that will preserve the old traditions.”
“We came to Bali as refugees, carrying nothing but our faith and our traditions. We built a new kingdom on this island. We built temples, we created art, we preserved the old rituals. We did not forget where we came from—we carried our homeland in our hearts.” — A Gelgel priest
