The Attack That Captured the Government

The Second Dutch Military Aggression (Operation Kraai / “Operation Crow”) was launched on 19 December 1948 by the Dutch colonial army. The pretext: the Republic had violated the Renville Agreement.

The Dutch attack targeted Yogyakarta, the temporary capital of the Republic. On 19 December 1948:

The attack caught the Republic off guard. Sukarno broadcast a message:

“The Republic of Indonesia is under attack. We will continue the struggle in the jungle.”

  • Sukarno and Hatta were captured
  • General Sudirman escaped into the jungle
  • The TNI retreated and launched guerrilla warfare from the countryside
  • The Emergency Government of the Republic of Indonesia (PDRI) was established in West Sumatra

Sudirman’s Guerrilla War

After the attack, Sudirman led TNI forces in a guerrilla campaign from the jungles of Java. He traveled with his staff through the countryside, commanding the resistance while suffering from tuberculosis.

The Ceasefire

The attack triggered international outcry. The UN Security Council called for:

  • Immediate ceasefire (20 December 1948)
  • Release of Republican leaders
  • Restoration of the Republican government in Yogyakarta
