The Attack That Brought the UN In
The First Dutch Military Aggression (20 July – 4 August 1947) was the first major military assault by the Dutch colonial army against the Republic of Indonesia following the collapse of the Linggadjati Agreement. The attack was launched on 20 July 1947 and lasted until 4 August, when a UN-brokered ceasefire was established.
The Collapse of Linggadjati
The linggadjati-agreement (ratified on 25 March 1947) had envisioned a federal United States of Indonesia and a Dutch-Indonesian union. But the Dutch refused to recognize the Republic’s sovereignty beyond Java and Sumatra.
