The Unfinished Revolution

The West Irian Dispute (also known as the West Papua Dispute) was a diplomatic and military confrontation between Indonesia and the Netherlands over the territory of West Irian (now Papua) from 1949 to 1962.

The Round Table Conference “Exception”

During the round-table-conference (1949), the Netherlands transferred sovereignty over most of the Dutch East Indies — but kept West Irian. The status of West Irian was to be negotiated later. It never was.

Indonesian ClaimIndonesia claimed the territory as part of its national territory
Dutch ClaimThe Netherlands claimed the Papuans were “racially distinct” from Indonesians
