English (EN)

The New Order (Orde Baru) was the authoritarian regime of President suharto from 1967 to 1998.

Economic Development

Suharto focused on economic development, foreign investment, and agricultural self-sufficiency. Indonesia achieved significant economic growth during the 1970s and 1980s, transforming it into a regional economic power.

Political Repression

Political dissent was strictly suppressed. The regime restricted freedom of speech and the press, and the military played a dominant role in governance.

Corruption

The regime was plagued by systemic corruption, with Suharto and his family accumulating enormous wealth. Estimates suggest that the family’s assets reached tens of billions of dollars.

The Fall

The 1997 Asian financial crisis triggered mass protests, leading to Suharto’s resignation on 21 May 1998, ending 32 years of authoritarian rule.
