Mount Gamalama is an active stratovolcano that forms the entire island of Ternate in the Maluku Islands. It is one of the most iconic volcanoes in eastern Indonesia. The volcano was historically significant as the center of the Ternate Sultanate, which controlled the spice trade for centuries. The island’s entire population lives on the slopes of this active volcano.
