Balikpapan is a major city on the eastern coast of Kalimantan, Indonesia, in East Kalimantan province. With a population of approximately 690,000, it is the second-largest city in Kalimantan and the economic heart of the island.
Economic Significance
Balikpapan is the center of Indonesia’s oil and gas industry, home to one of the country’s oldest oil refineries, operated by Pertamina. The city also serves as a key port for timber, coal, and palm oil exports.
History
Balikpapan’s modern history began with the discovery of oil in 1897, attracting Dutch colonial investment. During World War II, the city saw significant military action, including the Battle of Balikpapan (1945) between Allied and Japanese forces.
Modern Hub
Today, Balikpapan is a modern, growing city with a strong business district and expanding infrastructure. It is connected to Samarinda and nusantara (Indonesia’s new capital) by the Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road.
