The Unfinished Compromise

The Jakarta Charter was a document drafted on 22 June 1945 by the Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence (BPUPKI). It proposed that Indonesia’s constitution include the phrase: “the obligation to carry out Islamic law for its adherents.”
