The Man Who Fooled the Dutch

Teuku Umar (1854–1899) is one of the most legendary and controversial figures of the Aceh War[reference:70]. His story is one of deception, strategy, and ultimately, martyrdom.

The Defection (1883)

In 1883, Teuku Umar shocked the Acehnese by surrendering to the Dutch with 250 of his men[reference:71]. The Dutch welcomed him as a valuable ally — a local leader who could help them pacify the resistance[reference:72].

But Teuku Umar was playing a long game.

The Turn (1896)

The Guerrilla War

The Death of Teuku Umar
