Ekspedisi Aceh Kedua

English (EN)

The Expedition That Took the Capital

The Second Aceh Expedition (November 1873 – January 1874) was the Dutch response to the humiliating defeat of the First Expedition[reference:34]. It was one of the largest military operations ever launched by the Dutch in the Indonesian archipelago[reference:35].

The Force

ElementNumber
Troops8,500 soldiers[reference:36]
Servants & Coolies4,500[reference:37]
Reserve1,500[reference:38]
Total~14,500 men
CommanderGeneral Jan van Swieten[reference:39]

The Campaign

PhaseDescription
November 1873The expedition departed, one of the largest Dutch colonial forces ever assembled[reference:40]
Cholera OutbreakA cholera epidemic struck both sides, killing thousands[reference:41]
Acehnese RetreatThe Acehnese abandoned their capital, Banda Aceh, rather than face annihilation[reference:42]
January 1874Dutch forces occupied Banda Aceh[reference:43]
Sultan’s DeathSultan Alauddin Mahmud Syah II died of cholera on 28 January 1874[reference:44]

The Occupation

The Dutch declared Aceh annexed into the Dutch East Indies[reference:45]. But occupying the capital was not the same as conquering the Sultanate. The Acehnese leadership and fighters had retreated to the countryside, where they would continue guerrilla warfare for another three decades[reference:46].

The Cost

Between November 1873 and April 1874, 1,400 colonial soldiers died — many from cholera rather than combat[reference:47].

The Lesson

“They took the capital. But they did not take Aceh.”
