Mount Agung is a stratovolcano in Bali, Indonesia, and the highest point on the island at 3,031 meters (9,944 feet). It is considered the most sacred mountain in Bali, believed to be a fragment of Mount Meru, the cosmic axis in Hindu mythology.
Significance
- Spiritual Center: The Pura Besakih temple complex, known as the “Mother Temple” of Bali, is located on its slopes. The Balinese believe that the gods reside at the peak.
- Eruptions: The volcano has erupted significantly in 1963 and 2017-2019. The 1963 eruption was one of the largest of the 20th century and deeply impacted Balinese culture and religion, coinciding with the Eka Dasa Rudra ceremony.
- Hiking: Climbing to the summit is a popular (though challenging) activity, offering panoramic views of the island.
